June meeting and local events this summer

Trinity Family History June meeting

The June meeting will be held on Tuesday 24 June at 7pm in the School Library at Trinity Catholic School, Leamington Spa.

We will be fixing a date and venue for the August brunch/lunch and planning our stand for the  Leamington History Society Local History Fair on 18 October.

If I have finished it by then I will bring in my gown for the Regency Ball on Friday 27 June.

Local Summer events

2014 is a year of commemorations and celebrations.  Warwick is celebrating 1100 years of existence, the Pump Rooms in Leamington are celebrating their 200th anniversary,  Clapham Terrace School their 125th and the Sydenham Estate their 50th.  Plus of course the 70th anniversary of D- Day and the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War and the assassination of Duke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June.

Family History is not just about names and dates on a family tree but about learning what was going on in the country,  and the place in which family members lived, sometimes about what was happening in the world.  Researching your family history can a be a gateway to learning about local history and even to experiencing what it was like for your ancestors by joining a living history society.

I make no apologies for giving a roundup of local commemorative events and a reminder that this year’s Heritage Open Days are from Thurs 11 to Sunday 14 September.

Events in Warwick

are given in an events guide leaflet which is available at the tourist information office in Leamington and online as part of the events listings for the district as a whole.

The newly refurbished Yeomanry Museum is due to open this summer with a World War 1 Commemoration exhibition at the Court House in Warwick on Sat 9 August.

The new Visitor Centre in Warwick at the Court House will be officially opened on Friday 19 September and there will be tours of the Court House and a photographic exhibition showing the stages of renovation.  There is also a Family Open Day on Saturday 20 September from 10am to 5pm.

Leamington Spa

The Pump Rooms has an exhibition “200 years of the  Royal Pump Rooms” which runs from 3 May to 25 August 2014.

There are various events as part of the Leamington Looks Back festival including the Regency Ball,  local history guided walks including cemetery tours, and a World War One Day and a Victorian Day.  The festival runs from 21 June to 6 July 2014.  Look out for the events guide leaflet.

Clapham Terrace Primary School’s Summer Fair this year is on Sunday 22 June from 12 noon to 4pm and incorporates its 125 year Anniversary Celebration.  The school has a active Reunion Group and you will be able to look at old registers, log books and other school memorabilia.  The group has a Facebook page “Clapham Terrace Reunion Group”.

Sydenham is celebrating 50 years this year at the Sydni Centre on Saturday 5 July from 1pm to 5pm, at Fallow Hill from 3pm to 5pm and at St Mary’s Church from 7pm to 9pm.  There is also a guided walk on Sunday 6 July from 6pm to 7pm starting from the Sydni Centre.  (Details are given in the Leamington Looks back leaflet.)

And don’t forget that there are still copies of the Pubs of Leamington Spa book available from the authors at the book signing at the Plough and Harrow in Whitnash on Thursday 3 July from 12 noon to 3pm.

Finally for Leamington the Summer Festival runs over the weekend of 12 to 13 July where they are bringing the beach to the Pump Room Gardens and the Leamington Summer Carnival is back on Saturday 12 July.

World War One

Warwickshire at War is an exploration of the First World War collections held by the Heritage and Culture department including letters diaries newspapers and photographs from the archive and museum collection.

As part of this there is an exhibition at St John’s House in Warwick from 21 July 2014 and a Living History Day including displays by First World War re-enactors on Saturday 9 August 2014.

So as we say to our children – get off that computer and go out and play!
